Hi! I'm Max Miller
Hello. My name’s Max Miller. As awkward as it is to write an About Me, here I go. The first thing to know about me is that I go absolutely feral for any kind of discussion on music.
My dad got me hooked at age 10 by giving me free access to his record collection. I spent hours deciding what to play first, The Kinks or The Stone Roses.
Growing up, I admit I could be a bit of a show-off, judging people by their music taste like some sort of musical elitist. But music has a way of humbling you. The more you explore it, the more it opens your mind. My dad’s vinyl collection taught me that, and watching music evolve over the decades has been fascinating.
These days, I run a record store, which gives me a front-row seat to the excitement of collecting records. One moment I am chatting about Kendrick Lamar, the next we are deep into Vashti Bunyan.
On this blog, I love exploring the behind-the-scenes stories of albums, the politics of the industry, and the ways music changes over time. Streaming has transformed the game, but there is something brilliant about people rediscovering physical music, whether it is vinyl making a comeback or simply appreciating an album as a complete work rather than just picking singles.
My love for cinema started during summer holidays, hanging out in the basement with my older brother and a stack of VHS tapes. I used to pretend to be a film snob to impress him, which was probably hilarious. But I knew I was hooked when I actually stayed awake watching Citizen Kane one evening.
That love has stayed with me, though I do struggle with how we consume films today. Algorithms deciding what we should watch can feel strange. I miss the days of carefully picking a film at the video shop instead of letting a computer decide.
This blog is my way of showing a slower, more thoughtful way to pick, watch, and critique films and music. I share my thoughts on what is worth your time and what is just flashy noise meant to keep you clicking. That is me, that is this blog, armed with a bunch of random knowledge and ready to dive into the things that really matter.
